My Very Own Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Isabella - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

My bedside lamp shined an orange glow onto the black and white lined pages of my latest read: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. The clock read 11:13pm, way past my twelve-year-old-self's bedtime. Adjacent to my lamp was a tall stack of Dork Diary books and other books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Day after day, I would stay up late just to read about Greg Heffley's action-packed and drama-filled day. His eventful days were a stark contrast to my never-ending loop of a school day. There was nothing to look forward to, just a boring day after another boring day.

After reading countless entries of Gregs, I decided I needed to start my own. I began writing all the events of my day each night before I went to bed. All my opinions, small but beautiful things I saw, and all the memories I made that I didn't want to forget. Before journaling, I thought my life was mundane but now I have the ability to look back. I can reread all the small individual things that happened each day and realize they actually do matter. On January 7th, 2021 I had the yummiest bagel; On May 2nd, 2022 I didn't make the volleyball team; On August 1st, 2022 I finished my first day of high school. Tonight I will sit in the same bed with the same orange glow that casted onto paragraphs about other peoples lives, but this time the black lines are blank. I will pick up my pen and write about how I finished another essay.
