More than numbers by Gisselle - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

Math has been the academic subject that challenged me the most, but it has been one that has strengthened my critical, thinking skills, the most. Throughout high school, I found that math required more than simply memorizing formulas or procedures. It demanded patience, logical reasoning, and the ability to approach problems from different perspective. At first, this was overwhelming, and I often doubted my ability to succeed when I couldn’t solve a problem on my first attempt.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was that making mistakes as a part of the learning process. Instead of becoming discouraged, I began asking my teachers for help, practicing additional problems, and reviewing concepts until I fully understood them. Breaking larger problems into smaller, manageable steps helps me recognize patterns and understand the reasoning behind each solution rather than simply memorizing answers.

As I became more confident, I realized that the skills I was developing in math extended far beyond the classroom. Math taught me to think critically by analyzing information, evaluating different strategies, and remaining persistent, when faced with difficult challenges. It showed me that there is often more than one way to solve a problem, and that finding the best solution requires careful thought and flexibility.

These experiences have influenced the way I approach challenges and other areas of my life. Whether I am planning school events through ASB, participate in community service, or working with students in my schools unified program, I rely on the same problem-solving skills. I developed in math. I have learned to stay calm under pressure, think through obstacle, step-by-step, and adapt when my first approach does not work.

Although math did not come easy to me at first, it became one of the most valuable learning experience of my education. It taught me resilience, patience, and confidence in my ability to overcome difficult challenges. Most importantly, it showed me that growth comes from persistence, and that every obstacle is an opportunity to learn. These critical thinking skills will continue to help me succeed as I pursue college.
