Learning How to Learn by Ginger - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
Before my junior year, chemistry had always come naturally to me. In Pre-AICE Chemistry, I rarely had to think about how I studied because I understood the material quickly. I assumed that if I paid attention in class and reviewed my notes, I would do well. That confidence disappeared when I began AICE Chemistry.
The class challenged me in ways I had never experienced before. Instead of memorizing formulas, I had to analyze unfamiliar problems, connect multiple concepts, and explain the reasoning behind every answer. My first test was a wake-up call—I earned a 60. I remember feeling completely crushed. I had never struggled like that in science before, and for the first time, I questioned whether I was capable of succeeding in the course.
My parents asked if I wanted a tutor, but after thinking about it, I realized that simply getting extra help would not solve the real problem. The issue wasn’t that I couldn’t understand chemistry—it was that I hadn’t yet learned the study habits necessary for a class that demanded a deeper level of critical thinking. If I wanted different results, I had to change my approach.
From that point on, I stayed after school to ask my teacher questions almost every day. Instead of rushing through homework, I slowed down and focused on understanding why an answer was correct rather than simply memorizing the steps to solve a problem. I reviewed every mistake I made until I understood where my thinking had gone wrong. Gradually, I discovered that learning wasn’t about getting everything right the first time. It was about being willing to ask questions, accept feedback, and continuously improve.
That experience completely changed the way I approach academics. Before AICE Chemistry, I believed success came from natural ability. After AICE Chemistry, I understood that success comes from persistence, adaptability, and the willingness to rethink your approach when something isn’t working. More importantly, I learned how to solve complex problems by breaking them into smaller pieces, evaluating my mistakes, and adjusting my thinking until I found a solution.
By the end of the year, I no longer viewed chemistry as the class that made me doubt myself. Instead, it became the class that taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my education. I had gained enough confidence in both the subject and my ability to overcome difficult challenges that I chose to continue into A-Level Chemistry, taking on two additional examinations for the opportunity to earn more college credit. I made that decision not because the class had become easy, but because I had learned that I was capable of succeeding in difficult environments when I was willing to put in the effort.
Looking back, the greatest lesson I learned was not about chemical reactions or equations. It was learning how to learn. AICE Chemistry taught me to think critically, embrace challenges instead of avoiding them, and recognize that setbacks are not signs of failure—they are opportunities to grow. Those lessons have shaped the way I approach every academic challenge since and will continue to guide me as I pursue a career in medicine, where curiosity, resilience, and lifelong learning are essential.
