The Lessons Love Taught Me by Faith - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

Learning Through Feedback and Personal Growth

A lesson that has had a major impact on my personal growth came from my relationship with my fiancé. Before being in a serious relationship, I did not always understand the importance of accepting feedback from another person. I used to think that when someone pointed out something I could improve, it meant they were unhappy with who I was. Over time, I learned that feedback from someone who truly loves and cares about me is not meant to change me. It is meant to help me grow and become a better version of myself.

When my fiancé would bring certain things to my attention, my first reaction was not always the best. Sometimes I felt like I was being judged or that I was not good enough. After reflecting on those conversations, I realized that he was not trying to take away the things that make me who I am. He was helping me recognize areas where I could improve, especially when it came to communication, understanding, and how I handled certain situations.

One of the hardest things to learn was that growth requires being honest with yourself. It is easy to point out what someone else could do better, but it takes maturity to look at yourself and accept that there are things you can work on too. I learned that being open to feedback does not mean that I am changing my identity or becoming someone else. It means that I am willing to learn from my experiences and become stronger.

My relationship taught me that love is not just about supporting someone when everything is going well. It is also about having the difficult conversations that help both people become better. I learned that communication is not just about expressing how I feel, but also about listening and understanding another person’s perspective. Those lessons have helped me become more patient, more thoughtful, and more aware of how my actions affect the people around me.

This experience has also changed how I approach learning in other areas of my life. Whether it is receiving advice from a teacher, a mentor, or someone with more experience than me, I try not to immediately see feedback as something negative. Instead, I look at it as an opportunity to improve. I know that in order to reach my goals, I have to be willing to learn, adapt, and continue growing.

The biggest thing I have taken away from this experience is that becoming a better person does not mean losing yourself. It means recognizing your strengths while also being willing to work on your weaknesses. Feedback has helped me understand that growth is a process, and every lesson I learn helps shape the person I am becoming.

As I continue my education and work toward my future goals, I will carry this lesson with me. I want to remain someone who is willing to listen, accept guidance, and keep improving. The ability to learn from others has become one of the most valuable lessons I have gained, and it has helped me become a stronger person both personally and professionally.
