Passion in Motion: Advocacy, Athletics, and Community by Emma - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
The 2025-2026 school year will be my third year in college studying Media Production, Management, and Technology with a concentration on Sport Management. During my time at the University of Florida, I have been involved in a number of extracurricular activities: Flipping the System, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating our college campus on how to prevent sexual assault and become an active bystander; Peak Pulse Run Club, where I serve as the marketing director and get to build the running and fitness community in Gainesville; and the University Athletic Association, where I serve as a marketing intern, assisting with promotions and event operations at nearly all athletic events on campus.
In anything that I do, I am motivated by passion. I chose my area of study as I recognize the unique ability of media and sports to bring people of all backgrounds and beliefs together – together, they transcend cultural divides. I have always been a fan of sports, both as a viewer and participant, and have a special interest in health and fitness. I enjoy pushing my body to its limits – I have run three marathons in three years.
This school year, I want to become more involved with Flipping the System, and take on a leadership role. As a sexual assault survivor, I want to give presentations and educate other students and faculty here at the university on how we can prevent sexual assault from occurring and what actions can be taken if we are witness to it. It is not something that I ever want anyone else – male or female – to experience.
With Peak Pulse, I hope that we are able to grow the community even more, and not just host run club meetings, but events. I want to bring in sponsors and provide participants with not just a good time, but products they can take home that they will use in their own fitness journeys. The community should be about more than just running, but bettering oneself (both physically and mentally) through fitness with others who share the same goals.
Lastly, I hope to work on-field for a football game. Previously, I have been assigned positions pre-game in which I assist with set-up and interact with fans pre-game. However, I hope that my advisors trust me enough to allow me to assist them with promotions and operations during the university’s largest sporting events of the year.
