From Confused to Confident: My Journey Through Systems of Equations by Elaine - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic topic that challenged me at first but eventually made me question my life choices in the best way possible was solving systems of equations. At the beginning, I genuinely thought I understood it… right up until I didn’t. The idea of two lines “meeting at a solution” sounded simple enough, but in reality, I was sitting there wondering why x and y were suddenly in a complicated relationship I was not invited to understand.

At first, I treated the whole topic like a recipe: plug numbers in, follow steps, hope for the best, and pray my answer matched one of the choices. I wasn’t really solving the problem—I was just negotiating with it. And the problem usually won.

Things got even more interesting when we started applying these ideas to real-world engineering problems. That was the moment I realized math is not just math—it is apparently also a personality test. Translating word problems into equations felt like decoding a secret message written by someone who enjoys chaos. I would read a problem three times and still ask myself, “Okay… but what is it actually asking me to do?”

It didn’t help that we also started using tools like MATLAB and CAD-related exercises, because suddenly my computer and I were both struggling for different reasons. I would think I finally had the right setup, only for one tiny mistake to send everything into error mode. At that point, I wasn’t solving equations—I was just emotionally supporting them.

Eventually, though, something clicked. I stopped trying to rush to the answer and started actually understanding what the variables meant. Instead of panicking every time I saw a word problem, I began breaking it down piece by piece like I was explaining it to someone who had never met math before (which honestly was sometimes me).

I also learned that checking my work is not optional—it is a survival skill. Because in engineering, one small mistake can turn a perfectly good solution into a completely different universe of wrong answers.

In the end, systems of equations went from being my academic enemy to something I can actually handle without fear. It taught me patience, critical thinking, and the important lesson that math is way more cooperative when you stop rushing it. It also taught me that I can survive confusion, frustration, and MATLAB errors—all in the same hour.

And honestly, that might be the most useful skill of all
