How I would make a difference by Dennis - December 2025 Scholarship Essay

Making a genuine, positive impact as student body president isn't just about cutting ribbons or planning pep rallies; it’s about listening and implementing changes that meaningfully improve the daily lives of my peers. My approach would center on three key areas: enhancing student wellness and mental health support, increasing transparency in student government, and fostering a stronger, more inclusive community spirit.
First, mental health would be a top priority. High school can be incredibly stressful, and we need accessible resources. I would work to create a peer-support network, training students to offer basic support and refer their classmates to professional counselors when needed. I’d also advocate for "wellness days" or quiet zones during exams, giving everyone a necessary break to de-stress and refocus.
Second, the student government needs to be more approachable and transparent. Too often, students don't know what the government does or how decisions are made. I’d use platforms students actually use—like Instagram polls and anonymous Google Forms—to gather opinions on everything from cafeteria food to spirit week themes. By holding regular, open forums, I would ensure that decisions are shaped by the student voice, not just the voices of those who attend meetings.
Finally, I’d focus on building a more inclusive community. High school can feel cliquey, and I believe everyone should feel a sense of belonging. This means actively supporting all clubs—academic, arts, and athletic—and ensuring they have the resources they need. I would push for more collaborative events between different groups to break down social barriers and help students discover new interests and friends.
