An academic topic that challenged me at first but ultimately strengthened my critical thinking skills would be the course Ap English Language and Composition. The curriculum for this course focuses heavily on analyzing an author’s purpose and rhetorical choices. Initially, I found the first essay type; the rhetorical analysis; incredibly difficult. It was challenging to identify an the author’s specific choices and purpose behind their writing. However, the driving force that strengthened my critical thinking skills was the word WHY? Learning to constantly explain why an author made a choice forced me to ask deeper questions, remain neutral in complicated situations and appreciate the nuance in complex scenarios.
The next essay type, the argumentative essay, was my favorite because it felt familiar. It was required bringing in my own evidence and analyzing it deeply. Even though this was by far my strongest essay style, I was still doing it wrong. While practicing and preparing intensely for the AP exam, My drafts didn’t always meet my own standards, but I knew I was giving it my absolute best effort. By the time I took the actual exam, I felt the argument essay was my strongest performance, even if the final score didn’t perfectly align with my high expectations. Argumentation taught me a vital lesson: things do not always go as planned, no matter how hard you try, and I’m ok with that.
Lastly the synthesis essay was structurally the easiest of the three. Having the sources and answers directly in front of me provided a clear outline. Surprisingly, it was my least favorite essay to write. It felt less like a creative challenge and more like a filler exercise. This shift in my perspective showed me just how much my critical thinking had evolved: I no longer wanted the easy route, but instead actively needed an academic challenge. Although AP Lang was an incredibly rigorous class, I didn’t regret taking it. It did not just make me a better writer; it reshaped my perspective and a lifelong appreciation for deep analytical thinking.
