Fighting for What’s Right - Lessons from Tanjiro Kamado by Chloe - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

Sometimes a fictional character can feel more real than people you actually know. For me, that character is Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer. Watching this story taught me one of the most powerful lessons I’ve ever learned: no matter how hard life gets, you should always fight for what’s right.

Tanjiro’s story starts with pain and loss. His whole family is killed by demons, and his little sister is Nezuko turned into one. Most people would have given up after something like that, but not Tanjiro. Instead of letting his anger control him, He turns his grief into determination. He chooses to fight, not for revenge, but for love and justice. This stuck with me because it showed me that doing the right thing isn’t about getting even, it’s about protecting what matters and staying true to your heart.

What I admire most about Tanjiro is how kind he stays, even in the middle of battle. He never forgets that demons were once human, and he shows them compassion even after everything they’ve done. That taught me that strength doesn’t always mean being cold or ruthless. Real strength can come from empathy, seeing the good in others even when the world doesn’t. It made me realize that standing up for what’s right also means staying gentle, even when life tries to make you hard.

There have been times in my own life when I’ve wanted to give up. Whether it’s school, personal goals or challenges I didn’t see coming, It’s easy to feel like quitting. But then I think about how Tanjiro never gives up no matter how tired or hurt he is. He keeps pushing forward because he knows what he’s fighting for. That mindset motivates me to keep going too, to work harder, stay kind, and believe that I can overcome whatever I’m facing.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from Tanjiro is that courage and compassion can exist together. You don’t have to be heartless to be strong. You can fight hard for what’s right and still lead with love his story. Reminds me that no matter how dark things get light always wins in the end.

Tanjiro Kamado may be a fictional character, but his lessons are real to me. He’s shown me that the strongest people are the ones who never stop caring, and that even when life knocks you down, you can always stand back up and keep fighting for what’s right.
