Changing the World Once Class at a Time by Chelsea - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

In today's society a pressing issue is the economic disparities in immigrant and low-income families. This often stems from lack of access to educational opportunities. that teach these life skills. Without this basic knowledge, many people face limited career options, keeping them economically disadvantaged and further perpetuating the cycle of poverty. If I could design a project for my community, it would be creating a community education program that provides courses that teach these critical life skills.

My plan would be to offer classes in financial literacy, English proficiency, and job readiness programs for adults. My goal would be to empower individuals, help them navigate daily challenges, and improve their quality of life. For example, teaching financial literacy would help individuals better manage their finances, which would take stress off their shoulders. Meanwhile, job readiness would help them be more well-equipped when applying for jobs. These skills will not only strengthen the workforce but also decrease the gap between economic inequalities.

My vision for this project would start in my community, but if there are successful reports, the programs could be expanded across the state, targeting areas with large immigrant and low-income families. For funding I would explore grants through organizations committed to community education and development like the Ford Foundation. I also believe that having sponsorships or partnering with local businesses from the financial, technology, or education sector would be beneficial to the program. They would be able to bring in donations of learning materials and speakers, which would aid the program's participants.

I would plan to measure this program by using pre- and post-feedback surveys to gauge how satisfied participants are feeling with the content being presented. We would also conduct assessments in our classes to make sure that everyone is keeping on pace and understands the content. Based on the feedback and results that we receive, we would make alterations to our programs to ensure that they are always meaningful and relevant to the community.

This project would help the people who want to learn or strengthen the skills needed to thrive in the United States but aren't sure where to go to get them. Making sure people get the opportunities that they deserve no matter who they are is the real American Dream. I believe that this initiative will truly transform lives. By providing the resources, we can strengthen the economy and community and build a better future with one class at a time.
