Building a Stronger Community Through STEM by Chad - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
If I could design a project to improve my community, I would create a STEM Innovation Hub for middle schoolers and teenagers of high school age. Such a program would give young people access to equipment and tools necessary for engineering, as well as mentoring services and workshops on different subjects, which could be hard to get otherwise. Coding workshops, robotics, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and computer engineering classes would be just some of the subjects covered by the program.
This idea appeals to me, as I myself participated in similar projects that were instrumental in shaping my love for science. Organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers Jr. (NSBE Jr.) and competitions such as KidWind had an important role in motivating me to become a future Computer Engineer. I think that such experiences are crucial in making one realize his potential and become a scientist or engineer; unfortunately, not all students get such chances to discover themselves.
Mentoring from professionals in various STEM disciplines and organizing events aimed at introducing the youth to engineering and careers associated with it are some of the key aspects of the project. Moreover, I would encourage collaboration between schools, universities, and colleges within my community, as well as between professionals working in the STEM area and the participants of the program. Students would work on projects involving real-world problems such as renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
Such a program would make its mark on my community, for it would educate young people and give them the chance to develop professionally and discover themselves and their potentials.
