Building the Foundation: My Journey Toward Medicine and Personal Growth by Cayden - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
My name is Cayden Boahene, and I’m a rising senior at Democracy Prep Endurance High School in Bronx, New York. This year, I am focused on pushing my academic limits, leading in my community, and growing as a person to prepare for the rigor of college. With this in mind, I have been engaging in research, projects, and extracurriculars that build a foundation of knowledge and skills to help me achieve my goal of becoming a pediatrician.
This year, I aim to maintain a GPA of 3.7 or higher, earn 4s or 5s on AP exams, submit strong college applications, earn college scholarships, and begin my senior AP Research Project. While I have not yet finalized the topic for my research, I’m leaning towards investigating the impact of early childhood education on the social-emotional development of children. I am excited about the opportunity to explore an area that will challenge me academically and allow me to develop skills in research design, critical thinking, and effective communication - skills that are essential for a future career in medicine.
In addition, I completed a research project on Parkinson’s Disease through the Einstein Enrichment Program, which I attend every Tuesday after school. I explored the neurological aspects of the disease, conducted a literature review, and presented my findings to program mentors. This program also allowed me to connect with doctors through guest lectures and hospital tours, giving me insight into clinical practice and the realities of working in healthcare. These experiences reinforced my interest in pediatric medicine and inspired me to continue seeking hands-on learning opportunities.
Managing my time effectively has been one of my biggest challenges, balancing rigorous academics, extracurricular commitments, and personal growth. To address this, I developed a system using planners and calendars, prioritizing tasks, and seeking guidance when necessary. By the end of senior year, I aim to consistently meet deadlines, participate in senior activities such as prom and trips, and maintain a healthy balance between work, service, and self-care.
Ultimately, I hope to be a confident leader who uplifts others and takes pride in learning. Whether in the classroom, community projects, or extracurricular initiatives, I am motivated by my dream of becoming a pediatrician and attending a top-tier university. Through dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to growth, I plan to make a meaningful impact on those around me while preparing for a future in medicine.
