When I entered high school, I had never been part of a team sport before, but I joined track because I wanted to challenge myself and find a sense of belonging. My freshman year started off rough. I struggled with workouts and felt behind everyone else, but I stayed committed. By the end of the season, I became the fastest freshman on the team. That achievement earned the attention of several upperclassmen, who began guiding me. At first, I thought they were simply telling me what to do, but I eventually realized they genuinely wanted me to reach my potential.
As I grew into my sophomore and junior years, I naturally stepped into a leadership role. I made it a priority to help newer athletes feel supported, included, and confident. Last season, my relay team attempted to qualify for the state championships in the 4x800m. One of our freshmen was extremely nervous before the race, so I pulled him aside during warm-ups. I reminded him, “You’ve made it here for a reason. Freshmen don’t usually compete at meets like this. Believe in that.” We didn’t end up qualifying, but afterward, he told me I helped him stay composed and that he now models how he treats teammates after what I showed him that day.
Now, as the top returner, many underclassmen come to me for advice about races, workouts, and even life outside of the sport. I’ve learned to communicate in a way that builds trust rather than pressure. I listen actively, I pay attention to what someone may be struggling with, and I try to give grounded, encouraging guidance.
This journey taught me that leadership isn’t defined by titles or being the fastest runner. Real leadership is the ability to make people feel capable and supported, especially when they doubt themselves. It’s about setting a tone that lifts the entire team. That understanding has shaped the kind of teammate and person I strive to be, and it’s a responsibility I’m excited to carry with me into college.
