Small Chunks, Consistent Practice by Antheus - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
The study strategy that has had the greatest impact on my academic success is breaking material into small, spaced-out study sessions instead of trying to absorb everything in one long sitting. As an adult student in Chamberlain University's BSN Online program, I do not have the luxury of a traditional student schedule. My days are already full, so I learned early on that cramming was not realistic and, more importantly, was not effective for retaining the kind of detailed clinical knowledge nursing requires.Instead, I study in focused twenty to thirty minute blocks, review material the same day I first encounter it, and then revisit it again a few days later. This spaced repetition keeps information active in my memory rather than letting it fade after a single exposure. I also quiz myself out loud as if I were explaining a concept to a patient or a coworker, because if I cannot explain something simply, I know I have not actually learned it yet. This method has mattered most in nursing coursework, where the material builds directly on itself. Understanding one body system well makes the next one easier, but only if the foundation is solid. Consistent, spaced practice has let me keep a 3.3 GPA while still meeting my other responsibilities.More than any single technique, this strategy taught me that discipline in small, repeatable habits beats intensity in short bursts. That lesson applies directly to nursing itself, where steady, careful attention day after day is what keeps patients safe. I plan to carry this same approach into my clinical training and my future nursing career.
