As a College Freshman... by Ana - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

As an incoming college freshman, my main goals are three.
Learn.
Improve.
Succeed.
Though, as a freshman, success may be something an overachiever is looking for. Because I was not an overachiever in high school, however, it motivates me to push and be better throughout my time as a first-year.
I will be majoring in Nursing at The University of Tulsa, with a goal in becoming either a nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwife. My goals come from being inspired by many healthcare workers throughout my time as a volunteer at a clinic, and my motivation to keep going is none other than my family.
As a Hispanic woman raised in a mostly American state, while I was growing up, of course, I learned that being the first in your family to go to college, especially into a health field, is not easy. Many obstacles may get in your way, such as college expenses, lack of preparation, and lack of support due to being first generation. Nonetheless, at TU, I have already felt that I will succeed, thanks to the many opportunities provided for students like me.
As much as my family, my parents, fought for me to have a better future, it is how hard I want to fight for them. I may be just a freshman now, but ten years in the future, I want to be the daughter who changes everything for us, that does everything my parents did and provided so much for.
I don’t just want to be a change in the world.
I want to be a legacy, an inspiration, and a successful daughter.
