An important lesson I learned from a book by Ameer - October 2025 Scholarship Essay
In Suzanne Collins' novel The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen learns a valuable lesson about bravery and sacrificing for others. She grows up in the kind of world where the government, the Capitol, compels children to participate in a life-threatening game for the purpose of entertainment. When Prim, Katniss's younger sister, gets selected, Katniss doesn't consider for a moment—she volunteers. There you see how brave Katniss is as well as how much she loves her relatives.
But Katniss's bravery isn't about rushing towards danger. In the Games, she continues making decisions that benefit others as well, even when it might lose her her life. She takes chances for the sake of friends, takes care of the weak, and won't blindly follow the rules. What sets her apart especially is when she continues on despite being frightened herself, demonstrating the point where courage isn't being without fear—it's doing the right thing in spite.
Katniss also demonstrates how strong love and sacrifice can be. She's not just fighting for herself but for her sister, her companions, and even for her region. What her life teaches us is how an individual could make a difference no matter how small the act was. Reading Katniss' life made me see how important it is to stand up for the right thing no matter how challenging.
