Home Ec Should Be Mandatory by Amaurie - June 2025 Scholarship Essay

There have been many complaints recently in relation to the newer generations inability to do basic tasks for themselves. There is the understanding that everything needs to be taught to children. From blowing their nose, taking baths, and tying their shoes. There is no such thing as "common sense" when it comes to a person who has a blank slate of knowledge. It's a real " you don't know what you don't know" situation. Recently, it has been discussed that people are picking up classes to assist with their incomplete knowledge of basic life skills. It can be dismissed that the youth don't want to learn.
It is known that schools are the backbone of our society. This is where primary learning and social interactions occur for children and young adults. This time should also be spent preparing them for life. It is a common acknowledgment that everyone is not raised the same. The one place where teaching is standardized is in the education system. This is where what isn't being covered at home can be covered in school. Home economics teaches some of the most basic skills that can help us as we grow older. It covers cooking, cleaning, and finances. These are the heaviest responsibilities as we age. Combating knowledge deficiencies early on and strengthening them will combat the likelihood of basic incompetency issues in the future.
Home economics teaches foundational skills, outside of literature and mathematics, that are used every day. With that being the case, I believe it should be a mandatory class taught to students.
