Feedback in Martial Arts and How It Has Shaped Me by Amaia - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
I'm a martial artist. I have been doing martial arts for about five years now, and in that time I've learned that one of the most important skills you can develop is being receptive to feedback. Martial arts is a sport as well as an art form, and it requires a lot of discipline. As you progress, you have to learn to accept feedback from others and your own body. When I started, I received a lot of feedback about where I needed to position my feet, my hands, how I needed to move my arms and my legs, and so on and so forth. I wasn't the best at receiving feedback before this because I felt like maybe I was doing something wrong, or I would just feel embarrassed. However, as my instructors gave me feedback, I began to see how it helped me grow. As I got better and began to understand and know the material, that feedback became a crucial tool I still use to this day to help me perfect the small but important details such as form and the amount of power in certain movements.
Receiving feedback can be embarrassing or annoying at times, but martial arts has taught me how crucial it is for getting better at anything. It has taught me to appreciate and accept criticism and use it as an opportunity to improve, not only in martial arts, but in other aspects of my life such as driving and schoolwork. These experiences accepting feedback in martial arts have helped me learn to be more open to learning. Feedback isn't meant to make you feel embarrassed or bring you down; it's a tool to help you learn and grow. This is what my experience receiving feedback as a martial artist has taught me.
