First Steps Forward by Alima - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
If I could design a project to improve my school or community, I would create a program called First Steps Forward, a mentorship and support network for first-generation and low-income students. The goal would be to help students navigate college preparation, financial aid, academic success, and career planning, while also providing emotional and practical support for challenges that often go unseen.
As a first-generation college student, I understand how overwhelming it can be to pursue higher education without guidance at home. Growing up, college always felt like something meant for other people. No one in my family had attended college before, so I did not have anyone to walk me through applications, financial aid forms, or even explain what college life would look like. Everything had to be figured out step by step on my own.
Financial hardship also shaped my experience. I was raised by a single mother of five, and I started working when I was twelve years old. Since then, I have always balanced school with work. Now, as a student at Michigan State University, I continue to work while paying for college on my own. There were many moments when financial stress made me question whether I could stay enrolled. I know firsthand how many students face the same pressure and silently consider giving up, not because they lack ability, but because they lack support and resources.
First Steps Forward would directly address these challenges. The program would connect students with mentors who have experienced similar struggles, especially first-generation college students who understand the transition. It would offer workshops on college applications, FAFSA and financial aid, scholarship searches, time management, budgeting, and career exploration. These are things I had to learn through trial and error, and I know how much easier the process would have been with guidance.
The program would also create a safe space for students to talk about stress, family responsibilities, and academic pressure. During my freshman year, I experienced moments where everything felt overwhelming, balancing work, school, and my family’s health challenges. At one point, I broke down before an exam because I was carrying too much at once. That experience showed me how important it is for students to have emotional support, not just academic resources.
In addition, the project would partner with local organizations and schools to provide internships, job shadowing opportunities, and community service experiences. It would also include access to basic resources such as school supplies and information about food assistance programs, because no student should struggle academically due to unmet basic needs.
This project matters to me because I know what it feels like to navigate life without a clear roadmap. I know what it feels like to carry adult responsibilities while still trying to succeed in school. But I also know how life changing it is when someone offers guidance, compassion, and support at the right time.
My goal is to make sure students do not feel alone in their journey. Success should not depend on whether you already have knowledge or support at home. It should be accessible to anyone willing to work for it. Through First Steps Forward, I would want to create a space where students feel seen, supported, and capable of reaching their goals, no matter where they start.
