What a Vocaloid Character Taught Me About Using My Voice by Alexzandria - October 2025 Scholarship Essay
One of the most important lessons I learned came from Hatsune Miku in the manga Hatsune Miku: Bad End Night. In the story, Miku and the other vocaloid characters are trapped in a mansion where they have to perform a play that keeps ending badly. What stood out to me was how Miku kept trying to find a way to break the cycle and save everyone, even when it seemed impossible.
Miku taught me that you have to keep trying even when things feel stuck. As someone with ADHD and a speech delay, I know what it's like to feel trapped by my own challenges, especially when communication is hard. Seeing Miku use her voice and work with others to solve the mystery showed me that persistence and collaboration matter.
This connects to how I work on design projects. When something isn't working, I've learned to try different approaches instead of giving up. When I'm helping kids at my church express themselves through art, I encourage them the same way Miku encouraged her friends—by believing there's always another solution.
Miku also reminded me that everyone has something to contribute. The characters in the mansion had to work together and use their different strengths. I've learned that the best results happen when people support each other. That's what I want to bring to toy design—creating products that help every child feel like they belong and have something valuable to offer.
