One academic topic that challenged me but ultimately strengthened my critical thinking skills was my African American Literature course. I enrolled in this class because I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of African American history, culture, and vernacular traditions. While I expected to learn about literature, I did not anticipate how much the course would change the way I think about history, identity, and society.

As I studied the experiences of African Americans throughout history, I was challenged to examine perspectives and realities that were both inspiring and heartbreaking. In particular, learning about the experiences of African American women had a significant impact on me. I gained a greater understanding of the sacrifices, struggles, and resilience of women who faced discrimination based on both race and gender. Their stories helped me recognize the strength and determination that contributed to the opportunities many people have today.

This course strengthened my critical thinking skills because it encouraged me to analyze historical events, literary works, and social issues from multiple perspectives. Rather than simply memorizing facts, I learned to ask questions, evaluate evidence, and consider how history continues to influence the present. I began connecting the experiences of the past to current social and cultural issues, which helped me develop a broader understanding of the world around me.

As an African American woman, this course was especially meaningful because it allowed me to better understand the history and experiences of those who came before me.
