In my eyes, strengthening a community does not always look dramatic. In reality, it is reflected in small, consistent acts of inclusion and support, especially in moments when nobody else is watching. Throughout high school, I have made a conscious effort to be in spaces where people feel valued and supported. These experiences have not only shaped my understanding of inclusion, but have also inspired my commitment to pursuing a degree in public health, where I can continue working toward equity and well-being in diverse communities. As a member of Key Club, I participated in writing letters to children staying in hospitals. This has taught me that even those who feel isolated can be reminded that they are not alone. Something as small as a thoughtful letter could bring comfort to these children. Through this experience, I learned that healing is not only physical, but emotional as well. Inclusion, in this sense, means acknowledging and addressing the emotional needs of individuals. My involvement in Jag Buddies further strengthened my commitment to inclusion by allowing me to work directly with students who needed additional support. Each student I worked with had different abilities, backgrounds, and challenges, which required me to be patient, adaptable, and understanding. I learned how to meet individuals where they are. This experience shows that inclusion is not about treating everyone the same, but about recognizing differences and providing the appropriate support for each person. It deepened my appreciation for diversity and reinforced my desire to work in a field where I can advocate for others' health.
In FBLA, I developed leadership skills that allowed me to contribute to my community in a different way. Being recognized as a member of the month and attending the New Jersey Atlantic City State Leadership Conference gave me the opportunity to collaborate with others, take initiative, and organize efforts that benefit a larger group. Leadership, I learned, is also a form of inclusion. It involves listening to different perspectives. These experiences have helped me grow into someone who not only values inclusion, but actively works to promote it. My education at CU Boulder will allow me to continue this commitment by providing me with the knowledge and skills needed to address health problems in the population. Studying public health will give me a deeper understanding of the social and environmental factors that impact communities, and how inclusive, community-based solutions can create lasting change. I hope to engage in service opportunities, research, and campus organizations that align with my values, allowing me to continue building connections and advocating for others. Beyond college, I plan to use my education to work in communities that need support the most, focusing on improving access to healthcare and promoting overall well-being. Whether through small acts of compassion or larger initiatives, I am committed to strengthening communities which overall makes me grow.
