Music by Addisyn - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

I have always felt that I had little to no artistic talents and felt that my friends who could draw and paint were so talented. I always felt so much less than them and didn't know what I was good at or even if I was good at anything. That is when I found that I may not be talented in visual arts but performing arts are where I shine.

I started playing the piano almost ten years ago. When I turned eight all I talked about is how I wanted to learn piano and I think it would be such an incredible experience. I quickly fell in love with everything about it, I practiced and took lessons for almost six years before deciding that I was ready to be on my own and continue learning at my own pace. I have continued to learn and grow since then and can play most anything I put my mind to.

During this time that I discovered my love of music I was entering middle school and decided to learn to play the flute, this lead me to gain more musical knowledge and from there I continued learning the flute for five years. I felt as if I connected with music in a different way and it really spoke to me, there wasn't a thing about it I did't like.

I loved the piano and flute and continued learning to play more and more instruments as I got older. Even if it was just a few songs I can now play the electric and acoustic guitars, trombone, trumpet, violin, ukulele, drums, clarinet and am continuing to learn even more. My family always loves hearing me play and says that any instrument I pick up I quickly learn as if I have played it before.

Music has shaped my life, I not only am constantly listening to it but I love to play it, sing, and even write songs. It helps my express myself in ways that my friends always could in visual arts. I was never "untalented" or "lesser" than them I just expressed my feelings and voice in a different way they did.
