During today's session, the student began with a quiz on the reading she had been assigned for homework. We then spent the majority of our time reading "The Monkey's Paw," this time using a method of active reading that focuses on organizing notes based on details about the story's setting, characters, and events. She did a great job extracting useful setting and character descriptions for the book. For homework, she will complete the rest of her notes on events and prepare to be quizzed on the story during our next week's session.

The student worked on a mixture of current and past due assignments today. The recent assignment, which he can receive full credit for despite being absent, was a read and respond piece. The topic was on ACT/SAT changes for college admission, which sparked a lively discussion given his recent experience taking them. He also completed 2 out of 7 late assignments for Oedipus. He agreed to work on some of the other 5 before our next session.

During this session, we worked on a French reading comprehension article and three magazine articles, as well as an article from the college website. The student needed help with the French discussion questions, but was able to piece together a response from the vocabulary he gathered in the reading section. He seemed very interested in the material we reviewed. For extra practice, he can read articles found online.

Today we looked at The student's exhibition paper. I helped him fix spelling and grammar errors and we reworked two of his paragraphs to be more concise and flow better. We also added transitions to the beginning of his paragraphs and worked on sentence structure in several other places. I made several notes of things for him to fix by himself later this evening. Mostly he is just checking to make sure sentences have proper spacing and adding a few more in-text citations.

I worked with the student on his weekly letter essay this session. We began by reading the short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" This story was actually an incredibly stimulating tale, and I was pleased to find out that he acknowledged its value even more than I did. The story leaves the reader with a cliffhanger, and the lasting theme emphasizes the importance of the question, rather than the right answer. I helped him read the story and compose his essay. He had a surprisingly proactive approach to his brainstorming and was unusually excited about organizing the essay getting the ideas down. This was very pleasing, as he was able to show me his approach to the prewriting phase of an essay, and he did an excellent job of putting together the idea for each paragraph in the letter. I believe the story itself was interesting for him, and with this excitement he really highlighted his writing strengths when working on something he feels more passionate about.
