Atlanta, GA Microbiology tutoring
We worked on material balances and equilibrium equations for an adsorption column and how to determine the number of stages in the column. We discussed both linear and non-linear systems. The results were compiled in a text document to be used as a test review.

Today, we covered structure of amino acids, the levels of structures for proteins, and the synthesis of proteins via translation. We specifically talked about the process of initiation, elongation, and termination for translation and the ribosomes involved. We then discussed features of cell membranes and ways of transporting molecules across the membrane. After that, we discussed key features of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, both plant and animal. For the next session, we will discuss cellular respiration and photosynthesis and perhaps evolution depending on time.

During this session, we prepared study plans for the student's upcoming physics test and biology quiz. We went over all of the equations he will need for mechanics and did a few practice problems on this topic. We then covered the key terms he will need to know for heat and waves. In biology, we reviewed the anatomy of the respiratory system, taking note of the location and function of each part.

We focused on the section on separation of mixtures based on properties like solubility and boiling point. The student was unclear on how fractional crystallization works, but she appeared to have a better understanding towards the end of our session. We also had to focus on the process of filtering and the required states the substances in the mixture had to be in in order to be separated by filtration. She also was unsure about chromatography but appeared to have a better understanding after we discussed it. She seemed more confident and comfortable with the material towards the end of our session.

We covered gas law problems in order to prepare the student for a test. We primarily focused on equation manipulation in order to algebraically solve problems, I showed her some modified versions of the ideal gas law that involve molar mass and density, and we worked through problems on the study guide. That went fairly well, once she saw how an equation needed to be manipulated, she was quickly able to solve the problem. We also discussed when to use different laws. The student requested that I try to find some problems for her that involve the explanation of concepts in order to solve them (i.e. essay-type questions). She has a test Thursday over this material and I will try to find her sample problems of what she requested by tomorrow night. I left her with video links to some barometer/manometer example problems.

Prior to this session, the student was given a list of problems to review for Chemistry. In this session, we continued to work on Lewis Structures, molecular geometry, and properties related to intermolecular forces. He has definitely made a lot of progress since the last session and is able to rapidly tackle the problems assigned with little difficulty. In Pre-Calculus, he and I covered problems that applied sine and cosine functions and went over how to set up the equations. He was able to finish all the problems and seems to be gaining confidence in his ability. I am impressed by the constant improvement.
