The student said he got a 14 out of 16 on his social studies test, which is fantastic. I requested he get a copy of the exam; he said he has trouble deciphering the questions and I'd like to see how his exams are worded. It may be something we can work on. He's doing VERY well with the math review. I give him a set of five or six problems each week to test his recall, and he's doing great. The only thing he still mixes up are negatives/positives, but I think this is more a lack of concentration than understanding.

Most of our time was spent covering vector addition, specifically in relation to cumulative force upon a set point (I.e., free body diagrams) and the meaning and means for achievement of mechanical equilibrium. It was a quite productive session, bringing The student from a state of uncertainty in the basic concepts to the ability to complete complex analysis on his own.

The student and I worked on the Writing section of the SAT. I covered the essay structure that she should use when writing her essay, and she wrote a practice essay. I think she can improve her essay writing considerably with practice. We then worked on practice multiple choice questions in Identifying Sentence Errors and Improving Sentences. I gave her an essay topic for homework. She will write the essay before the next session.

Reviewed topics in preparation for exam tomorrow. Topics included quadratic equations, equations in standard and vertex form, graphing equations, and simplifying expressions with root numbers. Student did very well with all of these topics and only had a few conceptual questions.

Today we went over the practice exam that she had taken. She has improved about 20 points since she took her exam the first time. If she scored just one or two more questions correctly, that would have pushed her into the 215-217 range. Writing is still her weakest area so we have covered that more extensively. She has a few more practice exams to take and we will go over those to see how she is doing.

We worked on a lot of new vocabulary words to help study for a test in reading. We made note cards that contained both the definition for each word and an example sentence to help the student remember the use for each of the words. Then, we read from a novel to practice fluency.
