Today I met the student and we worked out of the assessment test workbook that I got from her previous tutor. We did some practice problems involving math word problems and played a game involving rapid addition.

The student brought the first draft of his paper on Frankenstein to our meeting. I underlined the striking points in his essay (certain analytical paragraphs) and we discussed how these striking pieces could come together more cogently to help him form a unified thesis to drive the paper. We discussed certain tensions in the novel that could drive an argument that would both showcase his critical thinking skills and engage his natural interest in the story.

The student and I discussed her strengths and weaknesses. She believes her strengths are English and reading while her weaknesses are math and science. However, based on the work we did together, she does not seem to have any real issues with English, reading, or science. I think continued practice will help her a lot. In math she struggles a bit more than in other subjects, so we will focus our attention there as we prepare her for the admissions test.

We went over her college application essays and edited them using a 3-part strategy for editing that involves glossing, highlighting, and a few short checklists. When we finished, her essay was 98% ready to turn in, and it moved up several grade levels in terms of composition and prose. We practice rewriting sentences to make them clear, concise, and compelling. We also brainstormed for her creative writing final.

Today with the student we worked on another sample essay, critiquing and working more on how to make his essays have more depth and be more complex despite the general prompts. We also went through a sample test he did. Then we did another Writing section together. He has improved in Reading, and did very well on those sections.
