After graduating magna cum laude from The Ohio State University with a BA in Japanese and Linguistics, I spent time in Korea and Japan. For the majority, I taught in English immersion programs, teaching everything from phonics and essay writing to science and math. I had students of all levels: younger students who were still learning to read, write, and tie their shoes, older students attempting to enter international or American/British high schools and universities, and adults who wanted to brush up or continue to learn more.I enjoy working with students and seeing them learn and make progress. I like to think that learning anything can be fun. It all depends on the approach you take. My favorite aspect of tutoring is being able to relieve a student of their worries and assure them that they're completely capable of comprehending the material if they simply dedicate enough time to practice. I myself, was an average student in high school, however once I got to university I really applied myself and worked hard to get to where I'm at now. I started out taking basic classes and constantly going to the tutoring center as well as my professors' office hours. Building a solid base in these lower level courses helped me understand more difficult material in higher level classes to come. Once I started to take higher level science classes I was towards the top of the class in subjects like chemistry and physics (classes have 100-200 + students). Building a solid understanding of the basics is the key to success. I tutor general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, algebra and test prep for the DAT. I especially enjoy tutoring chemistry which I view as being the central science in understanding the fundamentals of how the universe works at the smallest level. I can confidently help students with the DAT having scored well myself (I can provide documentation of my score). When I tutor a student I first like to hear from them what they understand and then build from there. I find this is efficient because we don't spend time on something he/she already understands and can dedicate time to learning new information. During these two years, I tutored students in most science subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Physics, and Nutrition. I have also tutored students in French. I took French 1-4 in high school and completed a minor in French Language. I also completed a study abroad to Paris, France. While working as a tutor, I have learned two things specifically that improve the learning environment. The first is that each individual possesses a unique style of learning. It is important that I understand that style of learning so that real growth can be accomplished. The second is that teaching and learning are not two separate activities. As a student teaches principles they are learning they are able to understand those principles at a deeper level.I was born and raised in North Carolina and I am a NC State fan. I love watching college football and basketball. I played football and soccer in high school and continue to play whenever a chance arises. Payne Elementary School in Lynchburg, tutored Greek and Latin at Randolph for two years, and even substituted for my Greek professor several times for her 101 class.I am an ardent proponent of learning for learning's sake and that the classics is a gift open to everyone.
