"Closer than a brother, my Jesus is to me" we sang in unison as we took the rustic bus to our first clinic day. The seven of us college students had no idea what to expect. When we arrived, the number of people that were waiting outside of the church was overwhelming. These people rely on students like us once a year for medical attention; I grew dismayed. The community of Vere, Jamaica knew that during a week in March each year, our group would travel to them with physicians who would diagnose, treat, and counsel patients on their medical issues without the innovative technology we have the luxury of back home. Throughout the day, we saw over 100 patients even more when the children were dismissed from school. We saw a range of medical issues from fungal infections to hyperglycemia and even a few patients that we knew we did not have the resources to treat. I decided that I wanted to go into medicine after taking my first anatomy class in high school. I was absolutely intrigued by the human body, and I knew that because I loved medicine, I would strive to encompass myself in my work. My junior year of college was when my elective biology classes became more relevant to medicine I took a range of classes from immunology to genetics and as many anatomy classes as I could find, including human, comparative, and vertebrate. While these are considered some of the toughest undergraduate classes, I was able to take multiple at a time and indulge in the way in which the sciences come together. I also decided to pursue a second bachelor's degree in psychology to learn more about mental health issues. Leading up to the trip, I knew without doubt that I was intelligent enough to handle the workload of a medical professional. It was not until seeing patients in Jamaica that I understood what it meant to emotionally care for patients that are in poor health. What struck me most about our patients was the stability of their mental health and overall well-being. While all of these people were financially in poverty, they were wealthy in spirit and faith. While we were gaining so much clinical knowledge, our emotions revolved around those of our patients. I was blessed to have the opportunity to travel to rural Jamaica to set up medical clinics for the underserved populations. That week in March of 2014 was the most enriching and humbling week, and the best way I could have spent my Spring Break as a senior in college. I returned home with a broader perspective and understanding as to how I will one day need to treat my patients. I cannot wait to integrate such service into my career. Before this week, I had only shadowed a physician a handful of times and certainly did not understand the mechanics of even the most common diseases. I initially applied to be a part of CAMEO because I knew that this would be a great clinical experience prior to studying medicine, little did I know that the I would gain so much more than just textbook knowledge. One of the most fundamental parts of this trip for me as a future PA was learning how to make a differential diagnosis without lab work or radiology. After working countless hours as a scribe in the emergency department, I am able to again understand the clinical indications for particular testing, and then follow through with the patient to learn the diagnosis and the proper form of treatment for the patient. That week, I learned two essential components for successfully practicing medicine: patient care and clinical diagnosis. It is important to assume that a patient does not understand the dynamics of their condition, and rather than belittling them, effective treatment is reinforced when the provider takes the time to counsel and support the patient. Diabetes is a major disease in Jamaica as well as the United States and is linked with many other diseases that are becoming more and more common. A holistic approach to medicine is best when treating a patient who may not be able to afford health insurance or medications and is the only way to prevent medication dependency or advancing of disease. I was able to teach the signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia, as well as podiatric and dental maintenance, to a group at a homeless shelter through Volunteers In Medicine. For this group, seeing a family care physician regularly is not an option, and often meals are not of their own choice. In these two scenarios, prevention of further complications is the goal. Every now and then I catch myself chanting the gospel songs I learned in Jamaica, and I am once again reminded that these two humbling experiences, and my wealth of knowledge I have gained from working in the emergency department, have fortified my career choice and given me confidence as a future practitioner; I am thrilled to integrate my passions for both the material facts of anatomy and physiology with mortal facts of psychology and spirituality for a career in medicine.

However, quickly learned that being in the classroom would not be my career of choice. I changed my major and once I completed my Bachelor's degree in Management at Valdosta State University, I migrated to Jacksonville, Florida to get my career started. Over the course of working different corporate jobs, out of sheer boredom did I decide to pursue my Master's degree in business. Yet and still there was a void. I have always loved Math and the Algebra concepts that haunt so many students are what became engraved in my brain over the years somehow. My business card reads, "Do you hate Algebra? Well, I love it!" And it's not just my ability to teach the subject matter. I have a lovable personality that many seem to gravitate to! I explain problems in their simplest form making grasping the concepts super easy. Outside of tutoring, I am a married mom of 3 who loves writing poetry, reading books and photography.I look forward to getting to know all about you and how I can help you fall in love with Algebra too :)

I developed a love for history at an early age. I really enjoyed looking back at the past, and the exercise of thinking out why events fell into place the way they did. I felt that in order to understand history, one had to have a "proximate knowledge of many things," as the full picture of the past only unfolds with complex understanding and recognition of so many different aspects of life. Throughout my academic career, I have narrowed that interest to focus on Roman military history, an interest which I hope to pursue in the my future education. However, through my college education I studied a large variety of topics in the field of history, from sub-Saharan Africa throughout the colonial era and Cold War to American Indian culture throughout the America's in the age before Columbus.It has been my goal since high school to work as an educator, primarily to support my passion for history. I went to the University of Florida, obtaining a bachelor's degree in classical studies and history as well as a minor in education in pursuance of these goals, and have not stopped since. I have taught in a variety of environments; early in college I worked as a private swim instructor, and later in the same capacity for the University of North Florida. I have been a substitute teacher in Jacksonville, taking over as a permanent substitute for a middle school math class. I have also pursued tutoring on my own as well, primarily for Latin.Through Varsity Tutors, I am hoping to put forth my knowledge and academic expertise in the variety of areas I am comfortable to do so, but with particular focus on one area that remains a crucial point upon which our education system rest: standardized testing. I am a recent veteran of the rather arduous journey most students take through myriad tests, upon which their success and failure is determined. I have intimate experience and knowledge with the AP, IB, SAT, and GRE tests, and have spent time tutoring in the area of the SAT, as well as staying abreast of changes in testing protocol and procedure for those tests which I listed above, prior to my time here.At any rate, I look forward to working with students to achieve their academic goals, and to help drive new generations of success.

I graduated from Southern New Hampshire University this past spring with a major in English and Creative Writing. My number one passion is to write, write, and do more writing. I love writing anything from stories, novels, and literary essays. I tutor English, writing, reading, reading comprehension, and can assist with writing papers or editing papers. Tutoring is enjoyable because it is a chance to see others excel and also experience that moment the "light bulb" turns on!I personally believe everyone can learn anything as long as they put their mind to it. A skill is just a skill and it can either be mastered or left in frustration and confusion. Studying should be looked upon as an opportunity and not taken for granted. Practice makes perfect and yes, you can perfect every single subject!

Philosophy and Legal Studies.I discovered the academic Philosophies during my first semester as an undergrad and I immediately fell in love. I switched Majors the next semester and never looked back. After graduating with a Major in Philosophy and a Minor in Government, I worked for several years as an outdoors educational instructor. During this time I found a passion for helping others, especially young people, achieve more than they thought they could. After working outdoors for several years I began to look for something more long-term. A former peer, who was themselves attending Law School in California, suggested that I would do well in the Legal fields. On their suggestion, I took the next LSAT exam and four years later I received my J.D. having discovered yet another passion, this time for legal analysis.When it comes to tutoring, my approach is always personal. I believe that everyone is capable of understanding information if it presented to them in the correct way. What the "correct way" is, isn't always clear from student to student. The first job of any teacher or tutor is to understand the student and only then can the tutor present the information in a way that connects with the student in the unique way that the student learns.Because of this, I often will engage students in discussion that is designed not simply to assess their understanding but more so, to cement the information in a way that isn't merely academic but also practical.

In college I double majored in Business Administration and Transportation and Logistics. I then taught several years of middle school Language Arts/Reading and Math. I am state certified in several different areas and have years of experience with private and virtual academic tutoring. It is of my character to always put forth exceptional effort and to always go above and beyond what I am challenged to do.
