I am an English literature educator with a passionate commitment to engaging students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature. I am skilled in the design of teaching the close reading of texts to foster a deep understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for readers. Considering a work's structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone are the focus of my instruction. Writing is an integral part of my teaching core and I am comfortable teaching expository, analytical, and argumentative essay writing keys to successful writing. I believe in coaching students to success and am here to help you to succeed.

Hobbies

Yes, I do love long walks on the beach, snuggle time with my dogs, watching ball games that my boys are in, seeing my daughter dance on pointe in The Nutcracker, and sipping hot coffee out of my favorite cup that talks of "obstinate, headstrong girls," but for the interest of academics, I have had the opportunity to teach accelerated freshman, sophomore, and junior English courses. I have also taught AP Language and Composition and IB English Composition. I am currently also teaching the AP Literature course. In this capacity, I have developed relevant and rigorous coursework for my students. I assume all responsibilities of the classroom teacher including professional development, lesson design, collaboration with colleagues, assessments of students, and basic administrative duties. In addition, I have been charged with serving as school mentor/trainer and collaborating with English and other common core teachers to develop and implement literacy driven instruction for the classroom. I have guided the training to utilize and analyze literacy data to monitor and track student progress in the creation of standards based lessons and assessments. I have also led an initiative to realign the English curriculum vertically and horizontally to address changing curriculum standards and state assessments. In all of these roles, I believe that having a solid and growing knowledge base of literature and writing is a foundational building block for understanding and advancement. I would love to help you as a student to continue your journey with English.
