I am a recent graduate of Pittsburg State University, where I majored in Political Science and minored in philosophy. My focus as a tutor primarily covers writing and writing revision. Throughout all four years of college, I worked as a writing center consultant at the PSU Writing Center. As a consultant, I worked with virtually any type of writing assignment, from any field, and at any stage of the writing process. This includes typical writing assignments such as literature reviews, research papers, or persuasive essays, but I would also provide guidance on STEM-based lab reports, automotive diagnostics, entrance essays, philosophical works, and more. I have experience in assisting with any item of the writing process: grammar/sentence structure, focus, development, organization, citations/formatting, Microsoft Word/Google Doc usage, and style. I have tutored primarily fellow undergraduates in my experience, but I also would gain some experience working with graduate students on theses or potential publication entries. One of the biggest reasons I am passionate about tutoring is due to the ubiquitousness of writing and its application in nearly all walks of life. My favorite subject to tutor, I firmly believe that writing is one of the most valuable skills to obtain for any person who wishes to make a contribution to their field, find themselves at a higher position in their job, become a better communicator, or otherwise present their ideas in a clear manner. As the area of communication that allows for the most thought and time before its final form becomes set, the written word can and should become the clearest form of an idea before it reaches permanence. As such, as a tutor, I am determined to make sure those ideas reach that clarity so that they can be understood and then applied to their relevant field, turning an idea into reality. My teaching philosophy stems from this belief; in order to reach that point of clarity, it is important for me to understand and know how to reach the end goal of the other person's thoughts. I ask a lot of questions and tailor my response to the needs and goals of the person I am instructing, knowing that the best strategy is the one that works best for the learner, not necessarily the tutor. When reading or developing a paper, I am always on the lookout for both concerns of the learner as well as issues that the learner may not be aware of; this way, I address both the concerns of the writer, who knows their thoughts and assignment requirements better than I do, while still noticing problems the writer may not have recognized, which ensures that the piece of writing meets both the standards of the writer and the eventual audience.
My interests include creative writing/essay writing, video games, movies, reading, metal detecting, and spending time with friends and family. My favorite genre of media is horror, and I love spooky works of any kind, such as The King in Yellow, the Resident Evil series, Midsommar, and more. I am also a big fan of sci-fi works, such as Childhood's End, Fallout, or A Scanner Darkly. I am open to all kinds of work, and I would be thrilled to explore new works or genres at another's suggestion. I also love writing my own works, and I have two published essays; I hope to add to this number one day.
