Reading and Writing in the English language are my specialty. I've been reading college-level novels since I was in elementary school, and reading remains one of my most beloved hobbies to this day. Whilst in school, writing was a strength I could always count on. Essays were a constant requirement of classes, especially after high school, but over time I came to enjoy the process of research and writing, and even took pride in getting my paper back and seeing that "A".

In addition to my relative success in English classes, I am also a life-long theater artist. Since elementary school I have practically lived on stage, and even written a play or two myself. Gaining a Bachelor's in theater meant countless hours of poring over scripts to extract their deepest meaning. Stretching my creativity into play-writing and poetry, when combined with rigorous writing-intensive courses, propelled my reading and writing skills even further.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that truly effective teaching is a personal experience. All people are different, and thus all people learn differently. Having someone who can take the time to understand the way that their student understands is paramount to success in learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First sessions are the most important. The first session is when I would take some time to learn about the student so that I can identify their struggle and the way they learn. By taking the time to do this, future sessions can be made more effective.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent study comes when a student actually feels motivated to learn. I've always felt that instilling an interest, or even a passion, in the subject is the best way to make a student seek out more knowledge on the subject. As such, I would do my best to get them interested in the subject, to get them to actively desire to know more about it.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation can be one of the hardest things to maintain throughout school. I find that positively motivating, finding ways to take pride in school work and feeling good about themselves for improving, is the most effective way to keep a student driving forward.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Difficulty learning something will always have a cause. By asking the right questions and listening carefully, I would guide a student toward breaking through whatever is holding them back. Patience is the key, and sometimes all that's needed to break down a barrier is time.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension is a skill which requires asking the right questions and knowing what information to look for. In order to help students who struggle with this, I will talk them through the process of finding these things so that they discover the answer, rather than simply telling them what it is.
