I'm back to tutoring and editing after spending a few years in sales and management. Before I took time off to be at home with my son, I taught at Oakland Community College as an adjunct English instructor, and wrote and edited for Gale Cengage, an educational publisher.
I started tutoring at Oakland University in the Rhetoric Department the year I graduated.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Everyone learns differently. I like to get to know my students, so I know how to approach them. Some need a structured environment, while others do better with brainstorming.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would take a look at study materials and see what the student's immediate needs are. I would then assign an initial short essay to ascertain the student's skill level.
