"I CAN DO ANY AND EVERYTHING THAT I PUT MY MIND TO"

This is the motto that I live by and the motto that I would like to embed into my students.

I have been teaching at the high school level for 8 years. I have taught Math 1 for all eight years, Math 2 for two of those years, and a semester worth of Math 3. I have my bachelor's degree in education and a Masters in teaching and learning.

The biggest difficulty I see students struggle with is the confidence to attack a particular problem. If I can teach different strategies of solving a problem while building their confidence, they will when every time.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is more student lead than teaching lead. I do not want to waste time teaching students what they know and not focus in on the parts that they need to know. Therefore, I'd rather the students work out the problems and allow for me to see what they know how to do, and I can better assist them with how to get through the parts they do not know.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In an initial tutoring session with a student, I would like to start our session off with asking the student if they like or don't like math and why or why not. Then I would like to have the student tell me how they typically prepare for math homework, quizzes, and/or tests.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by making sure, when I am going over a concept, they understand what I am covering, and that the student can show they have mastered the concept with 100 percent accuracy on a short quiz that I have prepared for them.
