What is your teaching philosophy?
Listening is important. I try to let students advocate for themselves, and be detailed in describing what part of the assignment they're having difficulty with. I find visual, real-life anecdotes help get concepts across to students. Patience is essential. I never want to be cold or impersonal, while at the same time maintaining professional demeanor.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Have a conversation and hear about their interests; which areas they are confident in and which they feel are difficult as well as why. We can review the work together, running through the questions and text bit by bit before attempting to engage. I'd ask them what they are missing in their academic experience and what they're hoping to gain from my presence and help.
