Provide the right tools, and enough confidence, and anyone can succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, become acquainted with the student's likes and dislikes. Second, find a direction the student is comfortable in going and then follow the student, providing any necessary support.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Implementing thought patterns that will help students think outside the box and become better problem solvers. Also, I believe boosting confidence is a key factor.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive encouragement and sharing personal experiences that inspire the student. This will be geared toward increasing the autonomy of the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If the student lacks practice, practice with the student. If it is personal struggle, then I would patiently read with the student and try to make the reading experience better in any way. This might include acting out reading material, using voice in fluctuations to make the material exciting, or having the student write a passage and then read it out loud.
