What is your teaching philosophy?

Looking over the subject, understanding the issue the tutee is having and trying to solve it to the specific point where there was incomprehension.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself, ask if the tutee speaks French and detect how fluently. Then I would have an idea of the French level they have. Then I would ask which chapter or notion seems to pose a problem; from there I would start teaching.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become independent by first becoming "a student myself," then I would do the same exercise, and once the student sees how I proceed, then the student follows my steps. After I let the student do many examples, correcting after we are done, or during depending on the student and the severity of the matter.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage them, because I start always with easy examples and slowly I add more information; over time they are motivated enough to teach me back everything I taught them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I always reformulate what I am trying to say. Or, I can teach them and make them many examples. The last way is pretending to memorize with them, individually solving problems, and then sharing.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

1. Dividing the phrase word by word and understanding. Or giving them little paragraphs they wrote and reading it over and over when they go home. Or reading it to them at firs, and having them read back to me. Or dictating and defining the words I dictate.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

To be familiar with the concept they have an issue with beforehand.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would start by asking what they like doing, feeling or eating, and I would start introducing French words that relate and connect with the subject they had an initial problem with.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

A mini quiz at the end of every session. Verbal questions for pronunciation. And asking them to review everything we went over during the session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Encouragement, providing good tactical skills to use, and practicing with the student in question.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Evolution is conducted by first meeting and asking question about French, and what notions bother them. By also doing questions that pertain to the situation.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By assessing their level at first contact.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The material I was taught with, certain things I learned on my own, and the material provided by the student as well.
