What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy revolves around the student's learning style. I'm a versatile tutor, so I tailor my tutoring method around the student.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will gather some educational background on the student. I will also decipher the student's strengths and weaknesses.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will inform the student of all the resources available to help them learn. Also, I will let the students work the problems out before I review them.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would implement words of encouragement to boost the student's confidence. Also, we will set short-term goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will go over an example problem with the student. Then I will let them know the shortcuts and keys to solving the difficult concept they're having trouble with.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I will teach the students how to find key words and key sentences within the paragraphs. Usually, the main points are located at either the beginning or the end of a paragraph.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The best strategy is to be personable. Also, you must understand the content. The student must feel comfortable working with you.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I will implement words of encouragement and confidence. Also, we will set short-term goals that are achievable to keep the student motivated.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I usually make up my own problems to let the students solve by themselves. If they use the tools and methods correctly, I know that the student understands the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I will implement words of confidence. Also, we will set short-term goals and once the student achieves them, confidence increases.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I will let the student work on a couple of problems alone. Once I evaluate, I can figure out the student's strengths and weaknesses.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I will let the student work out a couple of problems and watch how they solve them. Also, I will ask the student what's the best way they can learn.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I usually bring pencils and paper. I always bring my calculator and a couple of formula sheets depending on the subject. If the student has a textbook, we will utilize that also.
