If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will reassess his or her level and use the knowledge she/he already has as a foundation or link to teach a new concept. Depending on age, I will choose the methods (from games to internet research) until the skill/concept is fully understood.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching is my passion. I reach my goals with passion, knowledge, perseverance, dedication, patience and observation. As a teacher I will instill these values in my students to help them succeed in their particular field.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will establish a dialogue with the student to identify their knowledge level, and further provide the opportunity to find teaching techniques catered to their needs.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will instill in the student the tools and confidence required to analyze the problem through reassurance and confidence for them to reach a solution using deductive reasoning.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I will maintain high self-confidence and independent thinking. I will reinforce their skills and remind them their goals. I will create a variety of teaching activities to prevent dullness.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I will dedicate more time and observe the students steps. Repetition of the same task, but different reading material might help. I will choose reading material that students have interest for and work on that.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like to know the students personality and see what works best for them. Playing games and competition with prizes seemed to be the strategy that worked the best for me.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I will connect the importance of that certain subject with our everyday life and emphasize the benefits of it. Positive examples of other students and a desire to be the best and succeed should help getting the student engaged in addition of a variety of activities for maintaining high interest.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I will get my feedback with questions about the material and the student’s description of the material, written or oral. Also lots of exercises and practice when it comes to grammar for instance. Repetition, reinforcement and lots of practice.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Depending on the subject I will insist on bringing all the positive aspects of his or her achievements regarding that subject. I will also encourage the student by providing support and built confidence and success.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Evaluation can be done with a variety of oral and written tests, or conversation with the student, in order to identify what needs to be improved for them to reach the level of knowledge expected for their age and subject.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt to their pace, likes or dislikes by choosing my working material accordingly. I am in control of the lesson but I also want the student to feel comfortable, relaxed and responsible in their class.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use internet information, articles, textbooks, toys if needed for younger generations, and audio and video materials.
