Tutoring review by Talia in San Marcos, CA
Today the student and I covered a new chapter in his textbook that he hasn't yet learned but will be learning in the next class. Specifically, we covered the topic of Polynomials in Chapter 9, recognizing different types of polynomials, identifying terms, coefficients, exponents (degrees) as well as adding and subtracting polynomials. He excelled in this topic, even though they hadn't talked about it in class yet. We did some conceptual work on the board so that he can learn what polynomials are and how they work. After we established a basic knowledge of polynomials we started on that section's homework assignment. We got through his entire homework set with very few errors in his work. Along the way, I assigned him challenge problems from online to test his knowledge on polynomials. The only errors I saw him making were incorrect distribution of a negative sign in front of a factor. We worked on a couple of problems and he always seemed to know how to properly distribute, but I think it was really just a simple overlooking of the negative sign in some of the longer problems. He has continually done very well in our session and I'm hoping to help him with his lack of confidence while preforming new kinds of problems. He always catches on to new concepts quickly.

We continued studying for the student's test. Topics included: probability, combinations, permutations, counting principle, as well as a bit from binomial theorem, arithmetic series, geometric series, etc. He will be well prepared. He will review a bit more, especially to memorize the summation formulas for the series and to make sure he is comfortable with the probability questions.

The student is expecting a test on Chap 8 in math. We reviewed all of the concepts studied in the chapter, he worked on the extra review problems, and he went through more difficult finding the average in word problems. Other concepts reviewed included strengths of different graphs in what they show: bar graphs, pie graphs, histograms, stem and leaf plots, and line plots, and finding range, mean, median, and mode. We also reviewed predicting forecasts when given information from a sample set, and determining if a sample of a prediction is a valid or invalid sample and for what reasons. Goals for the student as he does his work and approaches tests: read problems carefully and determine what is being sought, write down what he knows before calculating things, double check for accuracy and find any little errors.

We covered exponent rules, polynomials, exponential decay/ growth and functions. The student has already showed signs of absorbing the information more readily than just the previous few sessions.

We worked on code for using Newton's method to solve some root problems. In our next session, we will work on code for doing secant line approximations and plotting errors.

Tutoring review by Katie in San Marcos, CA
Once we got started, we talked about test-taking strategies and then we did math practice problems (algebraic fractions and triangle areas). The student is very good with radicals because she is currently learning about them in math class. Material that she worked on less recently, like the Pythagorean Theorem, was harder for her, but she did well once reminded. When given space, she is able to solve problems she said she didn't know how to do. We finished with fill-in-the-blank questions, and she showed an aptitude for understanding context and guessing the meaning of unknown words.
