The Albuquerque School System

Albuquerque, New Mexico, is the most populous city in the state, with a population of about 559,000. The Albuquerque greater metropolitan area has a population of nearly 910,000. The Albuquerque Public School (APS) district is one of the largest in the nation, providing educational services to nearly 100,000 students. In addition to the public and charter schools in the area, there are also many private and religious schools.

It can be challenging for parents to navigate such an extensive school system, especially if their child has unique learning needs or is struggling with their studies. Varsity Tutors helps parents connect with highly qualified Albuquerque tutors who can help children reach their academic potential.

Albuquerque students need to prepare for the ACT or SAT during their high school years, but they have several other standardized exams to prepare for throughout their academic careers. The New Mexico Standards-Based Assessment (NMSBA) is a statewide program with assessments given in reading, writing, social studies, math and science beginning in third grade. Exams are given each year through eighth grade. In high school, students take the New Mexico High School Standards Assessment (NMHSSA) and the New Mexico High School Competency Exam (NMHSCE). Students must pass the NMHSCE to graduate from high school.

Even students who attend the best schools may find themselves unsure of core academic concepts. A personal tutor can help your child fill any knowledge gaps and gain greater academic confidence.

The student needs to increase her attention span. After a half an hour she gets restless and her performance suffers. Today we reviewed the part of the assessment from last week that she finished modeling strategies for her to use to comprehend better. She then practiced them on her own to finish the test. She was able to perform the task with 80% accuracy.

The student worked on word problems that involved ratios, time, adding and subtracting with decimals, given an equation she had to correct the error, exponents and positive or negative outcomes, and order of operations. We also worked on science and the scientific methods, defining the components of experiments, and writing the observations. Excellent session.

Tutoring review by Belinda in Albuquerque, NM
This was my last day with the student, and we focused on math, specifically the speed subtraction tests. After looking over his tests, I saw that subtracting 9 from any number was usually left blank. I taught him the pattern where if you want to subtract 9 from any number first subtract 10 (which is easy to do in your head), and then just add 1. He was very successful with this strategy.

This session was mostly dedicated to precalculus. We looked at questions that asked about symmetry over the x axis, y axis, and the origin. We also looked at interpreting slopes with respect to real life situations. We then looked at questions in physics on vectors and how to determine resultants as well as breaking a vector into components. Overall, this session went well.

Next, I covered ions and how to tell which element takes on what charge. I did many problems on that, and he understood how to do the problems. Lastly, I had him name ionic compounds and molecular compounds, and he was able to do the problems easily.
