I have lived all over the country and just moved back to Michigan after four years away. It’s great to be back, especially in time for the fall! I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in sociology in 2006 and again with an MSW (Masters in Social Work) in 2011; Go Blue! I am a social worker with over 10 years of nonprofit experience working with children and youth. I specialize in art and education programming and have worked with kids of all ages in a number of roles: tutor, mentor, nanny, assistant teacher, camp counselor, and program manager. My most recent position was as a Teacher Caregiver for a family in Chicagoland. Among my responsibilities, I provided daily homework help and academic tutoring for three kids ages 5, 9, and 11. Before that, I ran a tutoring and homework help after school program in Seattle for Somali refugees. Now that I’m back in Michigan I’m looking for individual students to tutor in a range of subjects. I’m comfortable with elementary and middle school math, language arts, study and organizational skills, Spanish, general homework help, and ISEE and SSAT prep. I’m also comfortable with ELL/ESL tutoring for all ages and some high school language arts and elective subjects (e.g. psychology). Please inquire for more details. I look forward to working with you!

I love playing chess and teaching chess. I love everything about it. It's a mental battle of strategy and for me, it's way, way more than just a board game. I have been playing Chess since 2007 and I have learned from the best coaches in India. My peak rating is 1759 FIDE / 1892 USCF. I'm working on getting breaking walls in both formats and at the same time help others achieve their Chess goals as well. We all have been in a situation when we know we are winning a game but we somehow mess it up. If you join me it won't happen again. I will teach you how to Win A Won game.

I am currently a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in computer science. In the future I plan on either working on cybersecurity or game design. While studying at Washington University, I am also on the football team and help watch over the weight room in the athletic complex. I am originally from Minnesota, and I have spent years working with kids ranging from 5th grade all the way up to high school. Whether it be tutoring or coaching, I find it so rewarding to see how much progress that anyone can make through the course of working hard and having fun doing it. When I tutor, I believe that being engaged is vital to learning. I am passionate about math and science, and love tutoring anyone in algebra and computer science. I enjoy solving logical puzzles, and I treat algebra the same way. I firmly believe that anyone can learn math and science, and have fun doing it. When I am not tutoring or studying, I enjoy football and lacrosse, as well as following all Minnesota teams.

I want to help students gain an enthusiasm, interest, and increased understanding in mathematics. I want them to develop problem solving skills that could help them in their careers and enrich their lives. I have used mathematics my entire career and am aware of it's applications in so many areas from finance to engineering and science. If I can help a student either get past a problem in understanding a concept or solving a problem, or motivate them to appreciate mathematics I would be very satisfied.

Hello Prospective Students and Future Healthcare Professionals!!I am seeking the opportunity to utilize and develop my skills in the Healthcare industry and assist the following generations to greatness. I have a passion for learning, teaching, and patient care. My drive is to maintain a standard of excellence that I can atone or even succeed. My mission is to adapt to the changing situations and find the optimum solution that best fits the situation and the need.My personal educational goals are evolving. I graduated with Phi Theta Kappa and with honors at Southwestern Illinois College, where I received my Associates Degree in Radiologic Technology. I am a recent graduate from Mercy College of Ohio with a Bachelor of Science in Imaging and a Minor in Healthcare Administration. I graduated May 3rd, 2019 Summa Cum Laude and am eager to get back in the classroom! Currently, I am working through my Master's Degree in Radiology at SIU Carbondale's.Recently, I have also submitted an application to ASRT's Educator Institute. This program appears to not only be beneficial to me but will also benefit my current students and future students! I believe learning is a lifelong endeavor. My employment history includes Toys R Us manager and Radiographer. Currently, I work as an MRI technologist. Although I am relatively new to MRI, I can run several different MRI machines and, thus was picked up by two different companies. In my short time at IMI, I have taught several students while at M1 we are currently working to rotate students through. Although I love patient care and seeing patients, I also love teaching and training students!I am new to Varsity Tutors, but I am not new to working with students. As a Radiographer and currently as an MRI tech, I work with students on their clinical rotations. I train them on the equipment, go over workflow, and help them with any material that they need help with from school. Aside from academia, when I was in high school, I also taught martial arts to various age groups.Currently, I tutor ARRT test prep for Radiography and MR. I love medical imaging, so I don't have a favorite yet. I am open to teaching other subject also! I have a passion for education, patient care, safety, workflow efficiency, physics, anatomy/physiology, etc. One of my first students has passed their Radiology Boards! I am so proud! My style for teaching is just like how I approach life, constant adaptation. Students are not cookie-cutter. Every student is different and has their own specific needs and goals. My goal is to help those students meet and exceed those goals and expectations!Clearly, I am a nerd. Albeit, my nerdiness reaches far beyond academia. I am an avid martial artist and weightlifter. I am a fitness nut! When my schedule allows, I try to exercise. Humorously, I am also very much into video games, comic books and Star Wars. Due to my love for video games and Star Wars, I have taught myself a great deal about computers. As dorky as it sounds, my passion is learning and helping people. I feel education is the biggest thing that separates the masses. However, education is also the best way to empower and unite people! I look forward to the opportunity to utilize my demonstrated skillset, focus, team building, and leadership skills in addition to my rigorous academic achievements as a Medical Imaging Specialist and academic educator.Although my schedule is quite demanding, I am very flexible and willing to accommodate the needs of the student.

My approach to teaching is more or less a fusion of my experiences as an undergraduate, my interests in philology and linguistics, and my teaching experience at the University of Minnesota.Teacher-centered vs. student-centered teaching:In my teaching I have maintained the principles of proficiency-based instruction, and have been content to spend more time in a student-centered atmosphere than I probably would have been hitherto.I will, however, switch to a more traditional approach at times, that is, to a teacher- centered environment, concentrating on specific issues of grammar, structure, or style. Students appreciate the input of an expert, especially when they have a very limited knowledge base in the target language. My warm-ups are most always based on one-on-one teacher-student interaction within the classroom, which encourages students to make themselves heard in a friendly and supportive environment. Such warm-ups in recent years have fallen in one of several categories:1. Asking students to give information about the world (which, I remind them, includes the classroom).2. Asking students to discuss what they did the previous evening.3. Asking students to discuss what they did not do the previous evening.4. Asking students to make statements and have the rest of the class determine whether those statements are true or not.5. Giving students 30 seconds to compose a question, which is then asked aloud.6. Having students suggest random "answers" and having other students pose appropriate questions.Reading:As teachers, we encourage students to read for general ideas, not details. This is, I feel, the logical and correct approach. The difficulty is that it is easier said than done, especially when one uses authentic materials designed for native speakers. Whatever the text, pre-reading exercises must be carefully chosen and students must be prepared for key vocabulary items that will appear in the text.I have attempted to assist in vocabulary building by creating picture dictionaries and matching exercises based on the reading, examples of which are to be found later in this document. I also stress and encourage reading aloud in class at all levels to practice pronunciation and sentence intonation. I have furthermore put together storyboards for first-year reading texts, so that stories can be followed more easily.Technology:In the last few years, I have found that technology has allowed me, as an instructor, to design materials that look more professional and creative. Using graphics programs and experimenting with word processing programs encourages one to think a bit more like a designer, and thus try to see things from a student's perspective. The importance of technology in the classroom has also become more clear to me over the years: in addition to fostering a variety of learning approaches, the use of videos, computers, chatrooms, and, especially, internet activities constantly reminds students that they are not learning some secret language of a classroom, but one spoken by millions throughout the real world. One must always beware, however, of using technology for its own sake. The fact that a good online or computer exercise exists does not mean it needs to be used. As a coordinator (see below) I encouraged my instructors to pick and choose which exercises and types of technology they felt benefitted students most and, moreover, to avoid those exercises in which the student's negotiation of the task becomes overly complex with regard to the objective.General:My success rate in the first, second, and third years has, I think, been very high, and I have always prided myself on the fact that my courses have been in the main both informative and entertaining. Students have appreciated my stepping back from the fore to let them carry out tasks and activities on their own, but they also like the fact that I am willing to take class time to explain concepts that are unclear or linguistic information that I find relevant. Indeed, in one first- year class, my eager and diligent students constantly pressed me for more and more philological information until I was forced to remind them that we had other material to look at in the modern language. My experiences have confirmed my beliefs that 1) traditional approaches can be used alongside newer ones as long as one's goals are clearly set, and 2) that how one teaches something is always as important as what one teaches.

I am a second year student majoring in biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University. Outside of Varsity Tutoring, I tutor high school students every week in Math, English, and standardized tests. Music has always been a passion in my life, and it excites me to help students to fall in love in music. One of my favorite experiences in tutoring was when I taught a dozen children how to play basic notes on the recorder in Papua New Guinea (tropical island in South East Asia).Math is another favorite subject to tutor because I believe every student can become proficient in math when they learn that math is just using blocks of knowledge to overcome problems. As such, I am never discouraged if students are struggling in math; instead, I focus on their strengths and encourage them to use what they know to steadily tackle each question with confidence. In high school, when I researched and presented on the applications of calculus in medicine, I remember how rewarding it was to finally understand how to derive formulas for calculating blood flow in arteries. Finally in my spare time, I like to read the New York times, listen to a cappella music, or exercise in the gym.
