The student worked through her journal and completed another homework assignment. We reinforced a lot of the same concepts we practiced during our first session, and worked on how to tackle word problems effectively. I showed her that you can break larger questions down and narrow in on what they are actually asking to be solved. I showed her that it can be useful to underline the important pieces of lengthy word questions, to not get overwhelmed by the length of the question. She is a bright girl that is very capable of learning this material. I look forward to our next session.

The student is doing a mixture of easy algebraic substitution, but the terms are long decimals to be multiplied or divided. It is tedious, and there is a chance to copy the problem incorrectly. There is also a potential for organizational errors like not reading his own writing carefully on the carry-overs or lining up all the products to add. These problems always feel like you are really doing five math problems in one, so even though he understands this perfectly, we have to make sure to focus on the right things. He has good focus in many aspects of his life, so I want him to draw on that for these next tests. He should feel like he certainly belongs at this level of math.
