The Bellingham School System

Bellingham, Washington, is located just a half hour drive from the state’s northern border with Canada. The city is located about halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, and has a population of more than 84,000 citizens. Most area students attend one of Bellingham Public School district’s 22 schools, which have an attendance of 11,000 students annually.

Varsity Tutors can help you improve your child’s academic success by helping you connect with a professional Bellingham tutor. There are tutors available in the area who can assist students in virtually any subject. Whether it’s elementary math, high school English, a college history research paper, or any other topic, there’s a tutor who is right for your needs.

All students face testing from time to time, and Washington has its own assessments given yearly. The following chart shows how the largest schools in the Bellingham area perform on these exams.

Bellingham Test Scores

In grades 3-8, and 10, Bellingham students take the Smarter Balanced exam for English language arts and math. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science. High school students take end-of-course exams in many core subjects like English, algebra, biology, and others. There are tutors in Bellingham who specialize in preparing students for success on these standardized exams. You can also get a tutor’s guidance when studying for the ACT, SAT, HSPT, GMAT, or other tests that help determine admission or placement in a private school, college, or a graduate program. Your private tutor can cover content, details about the format and timing of a test, and strategies that could help maximize your score.

Bellingham tutors offer numerous benefits when studying academic subjects as well. For one, a tutor can quickly discover your child’s interests, strengths and weaknesses, goals, and preferred learning style. Taking these into account, a tutor can develop study sessions that focus on your child’s unique needs. Tutors also often prioritize building solid rapport with a student so there's open communication. When students feel comfortable, they are able to engage and participate in the process of improving their learning.

Session Summaries by Tutors

Tutoring review by Will in Bellingham, WA
The session went well. The student has solid math fundamentals, but he sometimes rushes through problems, and lets his pencil get a bit ahead of his brain. Once I showed an example, he had little trouble with the homework. I am confident he will be able to succeed in his class.

Tutoring review by Anna in Bellingham, WA
During our session, the student successfully worked to find the solution to a system of two equations using matrices- he found the inverse of a 2x2 matrix, found the determinant of a 2x2 matrix, and used the inverse and the determinant to solve the system. He also appropriately used substitution and elimination to check that the matrix solution was correct.

Tutoring review by Jeffrey in Bellingham, WA
The student worked on some work she was given to complete over the summer to keep her skills fresh. Specifically, she worked on fractions: ranking them, reducing them, adding, and subtracting them. We also began working on some geometry concepts introduced last year and to be expanded on this coming year. She did well on the fraction section and the intro geometry stuff.

Tutoring review by Brendan in Bellingham, WA
The student has a strong work ethic and manages her assignments well. The assignment we worked on was critiquing three separate (student-chosen) texts and demonstrating a high level of literary response on each. We looked at the author's background, the time period, the author's message, and more. We used her first choice to complete together and serve as a model for completing the rest, which was very productive on the student's end. We'll schedule sessions as needed for completing the assignment by its due date.

Tutoring review by Michelle in Bellingham, WA
The student wanted to start the groundwork for her book report. She has read 100 pages of a 370 page book. She thought through and completed details on the aspects of the story she understood: setting, some key characters, themes of conflict, title/author. She intends to read some, at least 15 minutes per day, near bedtime. I encouraged her to reflect on her reading per night-- what does she understand to be happening in the story, and how does that understanding fit in with the homework questions? She also did her math homework on PEMDAS equations with lots of negative numbers. We then reviewed the use of negative numbers. To review past math concepts, I had her work through the 3D to 2D problems and clarify cross sections. Next time, we'll also do some surface area and volume of 3D solid figures--cylinders, rectangular and triangular prisms, and pyramids.
