Frequently Asked Questions

The ACT Writing section (also called the Essay) evaluates your ability to read, analyze, and respond to a complex prompt in 40 minutes. You'll read a passage presenting multiple perspectives on an issue, then write an essay that analyzes those perspectives and develops your own position. It tests critical thinking, organization, grammar, and persuasive writing—skills that matter for college success across disciplines.

The Writing section is scored separately from the composite ACT score on a scale of 2-12. Two trained readers evaluate your essay on four domains: Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use and Conventions. Your raw scores in each domain are combined to produce your final Writing score. Many colleges consider this score alongside your composite ACT score when evaluating applications.

Virginia Beach students commonly struggle with time management—analyzing multiple perspectives while planning and writing a coherent essay in 40 minutes is demanding. Others find it difficult to move beyond summarizing the prompt to actually analyzing and evaluating the perspectives presented. Additionally, many students underestimate the importance of clear organization and strong grammar, which significantly impact scoring. Personalized tutoring helps you develop a strategic approach that addresses your specific weak areas.

Score improvement depends on your starting point and effort, but most students see meaningful gains with focused practice and expert guidance. Many students improve by 2-4 points on the 2-12 scale within 4-8 weeks of consistent work. The key is understanding the specific rubric ACT uses, practicing with real prompts under timed conditions, and getting feedback on your analysis and organization—all areas where personalized instruction makes a real difference.

A strong approach involves spending the first 8-10 minutes reading the prompt and all perspectives carefully, identifying key points of agreement and disagreement. Then spend 2-3 minutes planning your essay structure before writing. Most successful essays take a clear position while acknowledging and analyzing the other perspectives—this demonstrates critical thinking, which scorers reward. Tutors can help you practice this strategy repeatedly until it becomes automatic, reducing test-day anxiety and improving your score.

Most students benefit from completing 8-12 full practice essays under timed conditions, spread across several weeks. This allows you to internalize the format, practice your strategy repeatedly, and receive feedback on what's working. Beyond full essays, analyzing sample prompts and discussing different perspectives helps build the analytical skills the section tests. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who can structure a personalized practice plan based on your timeline and goals.

Expert tutors provide targeted feedback on the four scoring domains—helping you strengthen your analysis, develop more compelling arguments, improve organization, and polish grammar and mechanics. They can identify whether your struggles are with time management, understanding the prompt, or articulating your ideas, then tailor instruction accordingly. Regular timed practice with expert feedback is significantly more effective than studying alone, as you get immediate insight into what resonates with ACT scorers.

Your first session typically involves assessing your current skills through a timed practice essay or diagnostic, then reviewing it together to identify your specific strengths and areas for growth. The tutor will discuss your target score, timeline, and any test anxiety concerns, then outline a personalized study plan. You'll leave with clarity on what to focus on and concrete next steps—making your tutoring investment as efficient as possible.
