About Me
I am an English and Spanish instructor with over 6 years of experience working with students ranging in age from 5 years old to adults in their 70s taking university courses. For me, the most rewarding part of being a language instructor is developing a rapport with students, helping them to become confident in their abilities, and seeing them discover the joys of language learning! Learning about foreign languages and cultures has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. My experience with language teaching began in 2016, when I became a volunteer ESL tutor working with immigrant and refugee students between the ages of 12 and 16. In 2019, I graduated from Portland State University in Oregon. There, I earned two BA degrees (one in Spanish and one in Applied Linguistics), and worked on campus as a Spanish tutor for 3 years. I also became president of the university's Spanish Club and hosted a variety of events and workshops to promote student engagement. It was at this point that I discovered that my true passion in life is helping others discover how exciting and rewarding language learning can be. In my coursework, I specialized in Spanish and English phonetics, and have years of experience helping students master the pronunciation of their target language. Most recently, I worked as an online English teacher with students aged 5-14 years. After earning a college degree in my second language and spending time living abroad in Spain and Colombia, I have first-hand experience with the challenges and frustrations that students face when studying a new language. My teaching philosophy centers on the idea that language education should be accessible for every student. I customize lessons based on each student's learning style and personal interests to make the lessons as fun, engaging, and relevant to everyday life as possible. I find that classes are so much more enjoyable and motivating if students can immediately start using the new vocabulary words or grammar concepts to discuss things that they are passionate about! Rather than looking at random examples or copying sentences that they don't relate to, I prefer to focus heavily on conversations about their interests whenever possible.
