Joseph
I am a recent graduate from NYU where I received a B.A. in Mathematics and a B.A. in Language and Mind, a joint major between Linguistics and Psychology. I believe my areas of study demonstrate my approach to learning. I have always loved quantifying information to make it more digestible, but I will still think out of the box. This notion is especially important when analyzing language; after all, it is a human construct and an exact representation can be elusive. Here is a short anecdote, which I usually use tell people to sum up my way of thinking. When I was a child, twiddling my thumbs during a long road trip, I would grab a pen and paper and attempt to draw. I could imagine the details I wanted to create, but the drawing never came out the way I would picture it. So, I would play with numbers, because I could create the value. I can specifically remember multiplying 2 by itself 20 times, just to see what would happen, and I had no idea that I was uncovering an exponential growth rate. For the students that I will tutor, I will not only provide them with mathematical rigor, but also help them to picture the concept, as a way of developing their intuition.
