About Me

I am a senior at Georgetown University pursuing a bachelors degree in Biology of Global Health with a pre-medical concentration. My experience includes tutoring and coaching lacrosse to kids ages 5 to 16 for the last 5 years. I am enthusiastic, patient, relaxed, and organized. I really enjoy tutoring the following subjects: Biology, Spanish, Math, English/Writing, and U.S. History. I have always had a passion for science, particularly biology, which is one of the reasons that I plan to attend medical school in a few years. Writing is one of my favorite subjects to tutor as my liberal arts education at Georgetown has taught me how to successfully write papers, articles, and essays for biology, chemistry, history, philosophy, and psychology. I am currently working with a professor and another colleague to publish a project that we have developed that uses ethical leadership as a framework for the Olympic games to address health issues within a host country. Outside of tutoring and being a student, I enjoy playing and coaching sports like lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, kickboxing, and snowboarding. I currently play lacrosse for Georgetown and coach locally. My experiences on teams and as a collegiate athlete have taught me communication, leadership, and organizational skills. These experiences have shaped much of my tutoring philosophy. I believe that patience and positive motivation are crucial to helping students achieve their academic or athletic goals. At the same time, as a student and athlete I know that practice and repetition are the keys to fully understanding whatever material is being taught. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to offer a variety of tools and concepts in order for a student to find the best method to reach their academic goals and to build confidence.

Q&A with Candace

My teaching philosophy focuses on. Every student learns differently. In order to help students achieve their academic goals, I believe that it is my job as a tutor to help each student discover which learning methods work best for him or her. How would you help a student stay motivated? As a college student with a rigorous course load, I understand that motivation is one of the most important facets of learning. I have three keys when it comes to keeping students motivated: 1) Patience 2) Positivity 3) Perspective First, I must be patient as a tutor and recognize when/how a student is struggling. Secondly, being enthusiastic and positive is important, especially when teaching material that a student finds boring. Finally, it helps to keep things in perspective. In order to emphasize a subject's immediate or long-term importance, figuring out how to place the study material in a different light may be useful to some students. While this would vary per student, it often helps with students who may be overly stressed or anxious about certain material.
