I am currently a graduate student at Concordia University. I am pursuing my Master of Education, specialty reading/literacy. I have learned to assess students using both formal and informal assessment tools, collect data from the assessments and use the data to tailor lessons designed for individuals. One method of instruction does not meet the needs for all students. Knowing first what the need is of the student/learner, next create and implement procedures that will best accommodate that learners needs and style of learning. Prior to graduate school, I have 20 years of teaching experience in the Texas public school systems. I am certified to teach grades K-6, all subjects. I have had the opportunity to teach G.E.D. and ESL to adults in the mid 90's, this was a pilot program called Even Start. Those students were successful in obtaining their G.E.D. diplomas and some even continued towards higher education and pursuing their endeavors. I am a veteran, I have serverd 6 years in the United States Army National Guard as a medic. I spend much of my time working in my garden, I call it my sanctuary. My yard and gardening reminds me of life and how all things have the potential to grow, bloom and be restored; given another chance. That's how I feel about the student that I have been graced to teach and share knowledge with. They are the seeds of my harvest and each type of child/flower requires a variety of strategies and fertilizers in order for them to grow and flourish. I am honored to be a teacher and an educator. It is a privledge to touch the lives of so many people sharing with them the gift of literacy. Education and knowledge are powerful learning tools. When engaging and interacting with children my goal with is to help one develops the potentials and abilities that are already present in each person.
