Frequently Asked Questions

AP Computer Science Principles (CSP) is a college-level course designed to introduce students to the breadth of computer science. It's ideal for 9th graders interested in technology, problem-solving, and creative computing—no prior coding experience required. The course emphasizes computational thinking, data analysis, and how technology impacts society, making it accessible and engaging for students just starting their CS journey.

AP CSP covers five main units: creative development and programming fundamentals, data and information, algorithms and programming, computer systems and networks, and impact of computing. Students learn block-based and text-based programming, work with real datasets, explore cybersecurity concepts, and examine how computing affects society. The course balances hands-on coding projects with conceptual understanding of how technology works.

Many 9th graders struggle with translating logic into code, debugging programs when things go wrong, and managing larger multi-step projects. Others find the transition from block-based to text-based programming challenging, or struggle with understanding algorithms and data structures conceptually. Time management during the performance tasks (which count toward the AP exam) is also a frequent pain point, especially for students balancing multiple courses.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who can break down complex programming concepts, provide one-on-one debugging support, and help students develop problem-solving strategies. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to identify whether a student struggles with logic, syntax, or project planning—and adjust their teaching accordingly. Tutors can also help students prepare for the Create and Explore performance tasks, which are critical components of the AP exam.

The AP CSP exam is 2 hours and 15 minutes long, consisting of a multiple-choice section (about 70% of the score) and two performance tasks completed during the school year (the Create Task and Explore Task, worth about 30%). The multiple-choice section tests conceptual understanding of computing, algorithms, and data, while the performance tasks require students to demonstrate their ability to design, build, and analyze programs. Most students who engage consistently with the material and practice with released exam questions perform well.

Minneapolis has 182 schools across 34 school districts, many of which offer AP Computer Science courses and computer science clubs. Students can access resources through their school's computer science department, local coding meetups, and online platforms like Code.org and Khan Academy. Varsity Tutors connects students in Minneapolis with tutors who understand the local curriculum standards and can supplement classroom instruction with personalized support tailored to each student's pace and learning style.

In the first session, a tutor will assess your student's current understanding of programming concepts, identify specific areas of struggle (whether that's syntax, logic, or project planning), and learn about their goals for the course. The tutor will also review any current assignments or performance tasks to understand what your student is working on. From there, they'll create a personalized plan to build confidence and skills in the areas where your student needs the most support.

This depends on your student's starting point and goals. Some students benefit from weekly sessions throughout the year for consistent support and skill-building, while others might focus on intensive tutoring during challenging units or when preparing performance tasks. Many students find 1-2 sessions per week effective for staying on track and building confidence. A tutor can recommend a schedule based on your student's specific needs and current performance in the course.
